Creating a Starburst Mirror on the Cheap: Pt 1

I have been looking forever for a mirror for my fireplace. I really wanted one of these quartrefoil mirrors

but my HomeGoods and Lowes never have it. I've seen one like it around Blogland found at Target too, but alas, they  must have been all gone. It's OK too because I am in super-cheap Dave Ramsey mode and don't want to spent a dime on anything I don't have to right now.

Enter: Big Lots... I know I promised these would be zero-dollar projects, but  $7.00 is close enough to zero, right? Oh, Why was I inside a Big Lots, you ask? When I VOWED to myself and my readers I'd only be tackling next-to and free projects? Well, everyone knows they have the best deals around on kitty litter, right?

OK, started here:
$7.00 on clearance "Made in Italy" (!!) Mirror from Big Lots, check

$8.00 worth of wood shims from Home Depot, check

Glue I had in the garage for another (unfinished) project, check

I laid out the shims on the mirror in a trial and error way until I found a pattern that worked for me.

This is what I have done so far...stay tuned for the reveal!

Mixin' It Up

Sometimes, inspiration is just a few pushes of furniture around the corner.

I was getting kinda tired of the furntiure arrangement in my living room. I have tried it every which way, it is a very long and nwrrow space that connects to the dining room. There's always a big empty space between the LR and DR that the kids use a space to wrestle n stuff. I thought I might take advantage of that space a bit.

Things against me are, of course, the shape and size of the room. Then there's the shape of my coffee table-- a perfect square--which is so totally the wrong shape. An elongated oval would probably be perfect. But I am NOT buying any new furniture in the near future, so it has to work. Plus I really like it. The other boo-boo I have to work with is my big long green couch and matching HUGE chair. Did I mention this chair is HUGE? When I saw it in the showroom, it looked so elegant and it gave off airs that it wasn't as big as it really is. Here in my normal-sized home, it is very hard to place. So previously, I have shoved it into a corner. But that kept my furniture against the wall, which, is supposedly a big no-no. Then, my "Ann's Folly" pair of CL chairs. You can read all about them here and here. Basically, the style is all wrong in this room- but I really like them and I am forcing them in. So there. Then the biggie: The Fireplace. Most people who visit my home for the first time leave never even knowing I HAVE a fireplace. Its 60's modernity and low firehole make it almost invisible. And the awkward placement makes it hard to arrange furniture aorund it n a traditional way.
Well, without further ado, here's my "re-do":

It's kinda tight, one of my rules is I don't like tight spaces, but it works. For now, anyway! I know I will probably get bored and change it. Now that I see it in a picture, I can pick it apart. The fireplace really needs to be painted, or something, like I thought about here. That is, IF I want to keep it as a focal point. Maybe I don't. This space, since it sits in the middle of the room without wall anchors, needs an area rug to define it as it's own space. Not to mention pull all my colors together(Lime, plum, white, brown, black, mustard, turquiose--heck I keep adding more!) I already have wall 2 wall carpet in there, so laying down an area rug is tricky. People trip over them all the time. But it would look nice. My little primer-gray end table really needs to be finished. Now I am thinking Black, like the round one there by Mr. Big Chair.

Holy batcave, Batman, I like the way this is laid out.

pretty much what you see as you walk into my LR from the  foyer
It's prety difficult to mix styles like I am trying to do here. Where's Sarah Richardson when you need her? She makes it so effortless.
One of my fave SR rooms...look she has a cane chair AND a modern couch!

Later this week we'll take a look at, and pick apart, my Master and Master bath. Oooo, fun!
Make it a Great Day!

Living Room Drapes: DONE (PVC pipe rod!)

OK, I am on a roll-- hubs been helping me get this done for my Pampered Chef party--nothing like a party to motivate to finish those pesky projects!

Well I have a 113" long window in my living room which is a bear to figure out-- its too big for one blind, and previously (for about 1 year) had horrific vertical blinds (see before pic, below) as the ugly but functional (kept out heat, light, cold) window treatments. Initially, I was going to do the same thing I did with my living room (see post here)...have a lovely bamboo shade them some panels on either side. The blind I bought (the largest they had at 93") was too small, but I was still going to use it, except that I didn't figure what it would look like from the FRONT of the house (like crap). Couldn't do it because its the ONLY window that shows form the front of the house, and it would have looked horrible....

So, plan B went into action. I bought a 3/4" PVC pipe for 1.23. (YES you read it right, A DOLLAR TWENTY THREE!!!) for a 10 foot pole. (Get the thickest walled on you can get-makes it not as bendy)

Hubs invented this genius spray painting set-up (he strung twin through the hole using a pencil on one end and dropping it through ..ain't he something!) and hung it from 2 trees in the backyard.

Then I spray painted it 2 coats of Valspar Metal spray paint in  Brushed Nickel. One coat of clear coat when that's dry. I let it dry overnight, then clear-coated it.

Then I hit a snag: I could not find a bracket I liked, or that would work, for the PCV... I was lazy. I couldn't remember where I saw just the brackets...was it Tuesday Morning? Big Lots? I was running out of time, so I snagged these hooks at Ikea:

Luckily, they were the exact right size for the PVC...

Had these rings I bought a bazillion years ago at Tuesday morning for cheap (2.99 for pack of 7).. I knew I'd use them someday!

My drapery panels were, again my favorite cheap-with-upscale-look at Walmart... on clearance for 9.00 a panel. They look like ivory silk shantung... I love them....and they are lined. I kinda wish they were longer, but with the window seat there, I think it works.

Sooooo, 4.99 each for the pack of 2 hooks
9.00 times 5 for the panels
1.23 (woo hoo) for the "rod"
2.99 times 3 for the rings
soo, like under 60 bucks?
The only thing I wish I'd done was to bring the bracket-thing forward a bit--maybe with a small block of wood? because the curtain on the ring is not sliding freely--not enough space from wall to pole...but that can be fixed later.

Once again, 'cause I can't help myself....
here's the Before:

Living Room: an ongoing evolution

I've been going nuts on how to inject color into my living room, while still keeping it  neutral/relaxing. Also I needed to incorporate a new layout in a long, narrow room... one of the hardest room shapes to layout furniture.

Here's the progress

I like the green...what do you think?
Still to do:
Replace verticals with curtains and rattan blinds...
sew the pillow covers ON the pillows...haha, right now they are just folded on....
spray paint the coffee table pewtery-gold
get an nice rug? sisal?
